Who is this course for?
This course is ideal for 15-18 year old students interested in pursuing a degree or further study in Mathematics. Our students use this programme either to strengthen their application for degree in Mathematics degree and/or to see if it suits them.
It will be assumed that students are either currently studying for or have completed at least Maths GCSE or an equivalent. However, stretch work set for those who have studied the subject previously, or want a challenge.
What will I cover?
Infinity is a concept that is seldom explored properly before university, but underpins a huge amount of advanced Mathematics. How can you compare infinite sets? How can you describe a sequence that tends to a limit when it doesn't have an "infinity-th element"? What meaningful things can you do with infinitesimal quantities?
In this course students will study various new topics to gain an understanding of the real nature of infinity, and how it can help us to do new Mathematics. Topics may include the Mathematical Analysis of sequences, series and functions, the application of integration to Physical or Statistical scenarios where infinite sums need to be calculated, and theory of Countability in Set Theory.
Students will be encouraged to explore some of this Mathematics by turning logical arguments into formal proofs - an introduction to the style of thinking often used at University.
